Buying a car is a very exciting time, with the thought of getting behind the wheel of your new car! But you also have to think about the other costs of car-buying which is, of course, insurance and the all-important road tax. These costs all add up, and your final decision may be based on how much it costs to run.
For this article, we will be focussing on cars with low road tax. Obviously, the cheapest option would be to go for zero-emission or electric cars as they are free to tax until 2025 – although you still need to fill out the form! If you are reading this, then you are probably looking to keep your vehicle costs down as low as possible. So the cars we have listed below with low road tax are also affordable to buy and run as well.
1. Toyota Prius
Clearly, the godfather of hybrid vehicles had to be on this list. The Toyota Prius is the car that brought hybrid driving to the masses way back in 2010. Reliable and well-specified, the Prius is a solid choice for anyone looking to save on road tax and fuel costs.
Pre-2017 models emit less than 100g/km of CO2 and so pay no road tax. Unfortunately, the car tax system changed back in April 2017, so newer models will cost £155 per year to tax.
2. Ford Kuga
The new family SUV from Ford has made our list with its hybrid powertrain options. The Kuga uses a self-charging hybrid powertrain that allows pure-electric driving capability and combines a 2.5-litre petrol engine.
You will still pay road tax on this car, but it is very affordable at £170 per annum. This self-charging hybrid is smooth and easy to drive, while also being practical and spacious, front and rear.
3. Fiat Panda
The world’s favourite car that’s named after a bear! The Fiat Panda is cheap to run, practical and comfortable. It has plenty of interior space too for a little car with plenty of room for those taller passengers in the back.
Even better is the older pre-2017 models only cost £35 per annum to tax! If your aim is a cheap, comfortable and reliable run-around, then the Panda could be for you.
4. Ford Fiesta
The UK’s bestselling car for over a decade, the Ford Fiesta may be discontinued but it continues to be one of the most traded cars on the used market. With the brilliant 1.0-litre Ecoboost engine that is economical but still has enough grunt to make it fun.
If you are looking for a reliable, fun and economical car then the Fiesta has to take the top spot. It is a very popular first car for many new drivers as well thanks to its cheapness to run, insure and tax.
5. Volkswagen UP!
The VW Up is one of the best city cars around providing the low costs and easy-driving aspects of most superminis while adding the feel of a much more expensive and well-kitted car.
It is comfortable, fun to drive and surprisingly spacious inside! Pair that with the fact it is cheap to run and very easy to park, the Up is, in our opinion, the ultimate city car!
6. Toyota Yaris Hybrid
This small hatchback from Toyota is powered by an efficient petrol-electric powertrain. It’s also pretty engaging to drive, while interior quality is high, and equipment levels fair.
Road tax comes in at £170 per annum while running costs such as fuel and insurance will be as low as they can get with this little puddle-jumper.
