Since exploding onto the scene in the early 2000s, small SUVs have been common to see on British roads. Many drivers love the blend of practicality and affordability. Models such as the Kadjar and Qashqai have made the most of the trend.
In recent years models such as the Kia XCeed and Ford Focus Active offer buyers yet another, much sleeker variation of an SUV. You can even get SUV-like variations of front-wheel-drive superminis that boast rugged looks without the off-road ability, such as the Dacia Sandero Stepway, Ford Fiesta Active and Honda Jazz Crosstar.
For this list we will be focussing on small SUVs that we think should be considered:
5. Skoda Kamiq
The Skoda Kamiq is a brilliant model that handles well and is reliable in almost every aspect. It is built on the same platform as the Volkswagen Polo, Skoda Fabia and Skoda Scala. It puts you quite low to the ground compared to others in its category, its driving position is barely any more elevated than that of the Scala hatchback.
The interior is great as well with simple-to-use controls and plenty of soft-touch materials. Two petrol engines are available, with a turbocharged 1.0-litre in either 94 or 113bhp power outputs, while a more powerful 148bhp 1.5-litre petrol engine uses cylinder-on-demand technology, helping to save fuel.
4. Renault Captur
The new Renault Captur has seen upgrades in every area for 2022. It is slightly bigger meaning better boot and rear-seat space, plus the interior is now much plusher and tech-filled, with a hi-res 9.3-inch portrait touchscreen on top-spec cars and optional elsewhere. Adaptive cruise control and lane-departure warning are standard, though.
There’s a choice of five engines (three petrol and two hybrid), with between 89 and 153bhp, including a new E-Tech plug-in hybrid.
3. Seat Arona
Precise handling, good practicality and affordability are just some of the adjectives used to describe the 2022 Seat Arona. It is ideal for urban driving and with its 1.0-litre petrol engine pushing out 94bhp it is efficient too!
The Arona is also well equipped when compared to its rivals and is very roomy. The only down side to this model is the higher-end trim levels are quite pricey.
2. Volkswagen T-Cross
The Volkswagen T-Cross is arguably the perfect small SUV with great comfort and space as well as retaining the ease to drive and brilliant handling. It also boasts great running costs for those conscious of fuel costs (most of us these days!).
The T-Cross also comes with an impressive host of safety features that help it stand out among its competitors. If you are looking for something practical, spacious, comfortable and fun then look no further! This small SUV could be perfect for you.
1. Ford Puma
The Ford Puma has made a comeback as a small SUV, with a design like the original coupe but now with more space for families. Thanks to agile handling and surprisingly nippy performance, it will put a bigger smile on your face than any rival.
Not only is it fun, but it is also a sensible car to purchase with low CO2 emissions, and excellent real-world fuel economy and as the winner of WhatCar car of the year 2020 you know it is a safe option. That is why it takes the top spot for our countdown!
