BMW 3 Series News

BMW are expanding the 3 Series plug-in hybrid range with the addition of three more to add to the one they have currently on sale. After the success of the 330e, the 330e Touring will go on sale in summer 2020. Both the 330e and 330e Touring will be available with BMW’s intelligent all-wheel-drive system, xDrive, in addition to the rear-wheel-drive variant.

The newest version of the BMW eDrive technology gives more efficiency than before, in the Saloon, fuel consumption is between 176-201mpg with combined power consumption of 15.0-14.8kWh/100km and CO2 emissions of only 37-32g/km. Fuel consumption for the Touring is 176mpg, combined power consumption from 15.7kEWh/100km and has emissions from 39g/km.

As well as giving better efficiency and electrically powered range the plug-in hybrid version also improves the driving dynamics of the 3 Series. The electric motor gives instant power helping to give the car a characterful drive. The lithium-ion high-voltage batteries use the latest cell technology which allows for high energy content meaning the 3 Series plug-in hybrid models have a full electric range of between 34 and 36 miles (WLTP) of zero-emissions driving.

The high-capacity batteries are also used to power the car’s electrical system, meaning that there’s no longer a need for a generator powered by the combustion engine, making the system even more efficient. The fuel tank has a capacity of 40-litres, making sure long-distance travel is achievable, perfect for use as a touring vehicle. Brake-energy recuperation gives even more efficient battery charging whilst on the road. When using a BMW i Wallbox 80% charge takes 2.4 hours from 0% and 3.4 hours to fully recharge the battery. Using a standard household socket charging takes slightly longer with 4.2 hours to reach 80% and 5.7 hours to reach full capacity.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain consists of a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine which has BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology giving an output of 184hp, combined with an electric motor which is integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic transmission, giving a peak output of 113hp. The combined total system output is 252hp, this can be increased by 40hp for up to 10 seconds giving 292hp under high loads. The XtraBoost is available when in SPORT mode. Max torque in the 330e Touring is 420Nm.

The 330e Touring will be available this summer.
