Best Value Cars to Tow a Caravan

Some of you may love the trill of an adventure in a caravan, while others may see them as a pest on the road! One thing is for sure, with all the uncertainty as to when we will be able to travel freely abroad, caravanning may be the best option for a holiday for the next little while! So, we thought it would be helpful if we made a compilation of the best value cars on the market for towing caravans! This will include the weight it can pull, pricing, the interior and boot space, and a list of other competitive options for that weight class.

Caravan Weight: 1,100kg: Renault Captur

Renault Capture | CarMoney.co.uk

A popular small family SUV with plenty of room for luggage and starting from less than £20k new, the Renault Captur is the perfect option for a smaller caravan, with three Isofix attachments and a 5-speed manual gearbox, keeping the number of shifts you will need to do to a minimum of those tricky A roads. The Captur also has impressive fuel economy stats, with the diesel models averaging around 60mpg and with 422-litres of boot space (1,275 with seats down), this car would be the perfect companion for a holiday at home!

Caravan Weight: 1,100 – 1,200kg: Seat Leon Estate

Seat Leon Estate | CarMoney.co.uk

Tipping the favourite Golf Estate to the number 1 spot, the brilliant Seat Leon Estate! Coming in at around £22k, its only £1k more expensive than the hatchback and, considering how much more car you are getting, this is a pretty good deal! We highly recommend the 1.5-litre petrol with 150hp and a manual box. You will probably get around 40-50mpg but towing a caravan will obviously change that somewhat. Boot space is huge too, with 620-litres. All boxes ticked!

Caravan Weight: 1,200 – 1,300kg: Skoda Octavia Estate SE

Skoda Octavia Estate SE | CarMoney.co.uk

With outstanding mpg statistics and the practicality of an estate car, this starts off well and continues from strength to strength. Starting from £21,105, the Octavia is not expensive, and you get plenty of bang for your buck with more space than its Golf counterpart and loads of equipment to keep the family comfortable on a long drive. It has 640-litres of boot space which jumps to 1,700 with the seats down, so even if you are taking all 7 dwarfs on holiday, you have the luggage space at least!

This may look almost identical to the Octavia, but it is different, and very capable of taking you and your family on a nice caravanning holiday! Averaging around 50mpg and with a 66-litre petrol tank this car is made for long drives. We would recommend the 2.0-litre TDI model with VW’s DSG box and 150hp. The boot space is 633-litres (1,865 with seats down) and starting at around £30k, on the slightly more expensive side of the coin but it is worth it for all the extra trim you get! You’ll be grateful when you start to hear “Are we there yet?”
